About CAM – Centre for Applied Music

Applied music and sound methodologies for museums and cultural heritage

The Centre for Applied Music (CAM) is an independent scientific-artistic organisation based in Belgrade, Serbia, dedicated to the research, development and implementation of applied music and sound methodologies in cultural heritage, museums and public cultural spaces. CAM works at the intersection of music, sound, research, and audience experience, focusing on how sound and music can meaningfully enhance interpretation, perception and engagement in museums and cultural institutions. Its work combines original artistic creation with empirical research, interdisciplinary methodologies and international cooperation. A core area of CAM’s practice is the development of original, site-specific music and sound systems for museums (often referred to as synomusic or applied music), designed specifically for exhibition spaces, heritage contexts and public audiences. These sound works are not conceived as background music, but as integral interpretative layers that interact with space, content and visitors. CAM is actively involved in European cooperation projects, research programmes and international networks, collaborating with museums, universities, researchers, composers, sound artists and cultural professionals across Europe. Its activities include applied research, composer residencies, audience studies, publications, conferences, educational programmes and the production of long-term cultural outputs such as albums and documentary films. Through its work, CAM advocates for research-based, inclusive and audience-centred cultural practices, positioning sound and music as critical tools for contemporary heritage interpretation and cultural innovation.
